RE: Gala D’art oratoire 2020

The Gala d’art oratoire 2020 is scheduled for: 

When: Saturday, April 25

·                     Group 1: 9:15 

·                     Group 2: 11:00 

Where:  800 3 Street SE, directly east of City Hall

Is the Gala a competition? 

No, the Gala is not a competition.  The Gala is a showcase and a celebration of student achievement in French public speaking.  The only “competition” part of the process is the school’s selection process to determine which presentation at various grade levels will represent the school.  

How long does it last?   What happens at the Gala? 

Each group of the Gala will be about 75 minutes. Students give their presentations on the stage before the audience with a microphone. All of the Gala participants are presented with ribbons at the end of the event.   

Will it be a lot of extra work for teachers? 

The idea behind the Gala is that it NOT become a lot of extra work for anyone, but rather, be a part of the French Immersion curriculum.  What has been done in the past is the presentations were developed in the classrooms under the supervision of the classroom teacher as part of the regular French Language Arts program of studies. The classroom teacher decides if the presentations should be original texts, memorizations of fables, poems, etc. 

Recommendation: Maximum 1.5 minutes for Division I 

Maximum 2.5 minutes for Division II 

Maximum 3 minutes for Division III 

Who can participate? 

·         the Gala is open to students in kindergarten to 9.  

·         each school may send 1 presentation from each grade.

Please note, that no recordings or videos are permitted. Simple costumes that do not distract from the performance are permitted.

12th Feb.    We will be celebrating Valentine's day.  If the children would like to give cards to their classmates, please could you make sure that every child in the class is included.  Thank you.

What we are learning this month:

Science:    As a culminating activity to show how heat changes the state of materials we made Apple Crisp with our wonderful Parent Volunteers.  We will make ice cream next week and you could make it at home with your child.  we will be starting our new Science Unit about Liquids.

Social Studies:   We have started our new Unit On Natural Resources in the Three Communities of Iqaluit, Saskatoon and Meteghan.  The kids have prepared for their in-school field trip tomorrow.

Math:  We are doing subtraction with regrouping.  Please do practice with your child at home.  We are continuing patterning and problem solving.

French:  Vocabulary and reading comprehension are ongoing. We are also writing stories with a beginning, middle and end.  We use interesting adjectives and expressions learned in class.

English:   Charlotte's Web has finally come to an end.  I will be giving the children a multiple choice test and one narrative question which we will be reviewing in class.  This will be followed by the Unit on Bats.  Story writing with an interesting beginning, middle and end will be ongoing.

Art:  We will soon be working on Spring Art.

Health:  The children learned about the four food groups today.  Please do ask the what comes under each group.  Exercise/Physical Activity is a necessary part of Health.
