Galette des rois

Dear Parents,

This year for Epiphany, we will be having a BFG activity where the students get to partake in the experience of' 'Galette des rois'.

A Galette des rois is a puffed pastry cake often filled with frangipane, but we will substitute it for chocolate for a nut-free version. A charm, called 'fève' is then hidden inside. Whoever finds the charm in their piece of galette is crowned king or queen for the night. This is a tradition often celebrated in France, Quebec and other francophone regions around the world.

As Epiphany occurs on the first day back from Christmas break, we ask that parents volunteer to help us make enough of this delicious puffed pastry for everyone to enjoy. If you would like to volunteer, please click on the following link to sign up.

Thank you!!

English Language Arts: The novel “Charlotte’s Web” by E. B. White is off to a great start. The kids are always excited to learn what happens next. We will study vocabulary, make predictions about the story as we read along and do multiple choice activities. The Diorama for Charlotte’s Web is work in progress.
Math: We will continue representing and describing numbers to 100. We have started adding and subtracting 2-digit numbers without and with regrouping.  Basic facts and problem solving are ongoing.
Social Studies: We are studying the culture and language of the 3 communities of Iqaluit, Saskatoon and Meteghan. You could assist your child with this at home by looking at pictures of each of these communities online.
Science: We have started the Hot and Cold Unit in Science. Please ask your child what they have learned so far. Experiments with thermometers are ongoing.
Health: This is anti- bullying week.  The children are learning about bullying, bystanders and strategies to defend themselves.
Art: This month, the students will be working on an Inukshuk and igloo project and a Hot And Cold project.
Religion: The students are learning about Advent. For tomorrow the children need to prepare the following questions:
1.     What is Christmas about?
2.    How does Jesus help you through life?
3.    How many shepherds were there?
